Planning for Uncertainty: Memory, Gender and Resilience in Contemporary Urban Planning

Abstract

In this 21st edition of URBE. Architecture, City and Territory magazine, we address a historical moment where the city has ceased to be merely the backdrop of our lives and has become the epicenter of climate, social, and identity crises. The articles selected for this issue, taken together, form a dialogue on the need to rethink urban planning from a more human, inclusive, and environmentally sensitive perspective. Territorial management in times of crisis demands that we abandon rigid, technocratic formulas and embrace the complexity of emotions, memory, and ecology. The first major theme of this edition connects collective memory with urban renewal processes. In "Memory as a Disputed Territory," Vargas and Buitrago present the case of the SIMESA industrial complex in Medellín. This research confronts us with a recurring tension: the transformation of productive land into residential and commercial centers driven by increased land value.
