Abstract

The revitalization of the SIMESA industrial enclave in Medellín exemplifies the challenges of urban renewal in territories shaped by workers’ memory. This article examines the transformation of SIMESA through a symbolic-discursive approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methods. Cartographic and regulatory analysis reveals the transition from an industrial land use to a mixed residential and commercial centrality, accompanied by processes of land valorization and shifts in socioeconomic stratification. In parallel, interviews with institutional, technical, and community actors highlight the persistence of workers’ memories, tensions around heritage value, and the distancing of local communities from planning decisions. Findings confirm that SIMESA cannot be understood solely as an urban project but rather as a cultural landscape in dispute, where public, private, and community interests intersect. The article concludes on the need for urban policies that acknowledge industrial memory while promoting inclusive and socially legitimate public space.
