Biophilia, Environmental Justice and Socio-Spatial Equity in Latin American Informal Settlements

Equitable access to urban green spaces (UGS) is a key challenge for sustainability and socio-spatial justice in Latin America. The rapid expansion of cities and the persistence of informal settlements have generated unequal patterns in the distribution and quality of these infrastructures. This article examines how biophilic attributes of urban green spaces (UGS) operate differently among children, women, and older people in Latin American informal settlements, questioning the universalism of biophilia. Through a narrative literature review (2005-2025), three findings are identified: (i) the unequal distribution of UGS reinforces inequities that particularly affect women, children and older people; (ii) biophilic attributes generate differentiated benefits for mental health and community cohesion; (iii) Latin American contexts require their own approaches that integrate environmental justice and socio-spatial equity to avoid green gentrification. The article concludes with recommendations for participatory and inclusive urban planning.
