Purpose: To study the influence of fundamental and macroeconomic variables on the supply of bank loans in Mexico between 2001 and 2021.
Design/Methodology: Multiple regressions were used to analyze the impact of bank-specific and macroeconomic variables on the supply of bank loans. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the statistical significance of the differences in the supply of credit in the different economic cycles.
Results: Three bank-specific and six macroeconomic variables were significant in the supply of loans. And it was observed that credits increased in crisis periods.
Implications: These results have implications for bank management and the design of public policies to encourage lending.
Originality: It studies the impact of fundamental and macroeconomic variables on the supply of bank loans in periods of crisis versus economic boom, contributing to an empirical study of the variables that impact the supply of loans. This topic has been scarcely studied in the Mexican context.
