Education and financial inclusion in Mexico and Colombia

Purpose: The objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of financial education and inclusion between Mexico and Colombia.

Design/Methodology: To contrast financial literacy, we employ the qualitative research technique of content analysis to examine national strategies of financial education in both nations. For financial inclusion, we utilize the Global Index, considering the usage of financial products and employ linear regressions as an econometric analysis technique.

Results: In general, both countries showed similarities in their results.

Practical implications: Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that Colombia addressed the subject of “retirement welfare and old-age protection” as a central theme in their National Strategy for Economic and Financial Education. This emphasis resulted in a higher quantity in the variable “concern about the future” compared to Mexico.

Originality/Value: This study results may prove valuable to improve financial strategies in both nations.

Earnout in M&A operations in Brazil and their impact on Equity Valuation

Purpose: to evaluate the recording of information related to M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) transactions that include earnout as an element of contingent consideration in accordance with the accounting standard IFRS 3 - Business Combination and the key aspects of accounting information disclosure as per the IASB Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting.

Methodology: We conducted exploratory, descriptive, and qualitative research that adopted a three-dimensional view to analyze the economic, legal, and accounting aspects of business combination transactions carried out with the use of Earnout. We considered all M&A operations conducted in Brazil between 2016 and 2020 by companies listed on the Brazilian Stock Exchange, which included earnout components.

Findings: Our findings indicate that acquiring companies comply with the regulatory requirements of IFRS 3. However, they do not consistently provide uniform, comprehensive, and transparent information regarding earnout transactions.

Practical implications: This study underscores the necessity to reconsider the disclosure criteria for earnout transactions. It emphasizes the importance of providing useful information to stakeholders through financial statements and accompanying explanatory notes, enabling interested parties to comprehend the financial structure of the transaction and its potential future impacts on financial statements.

Value: This research contributes to the capital market, regulators, and other interested parties by demonstrating the economic and legal characteristics vis-à-vis the accounting treatment attributed to earnout in M&A transactions. It addresses the gap in existing literature and highlights the need to revise the criteria for disclosure of useful information.

Comparative analysis of the levels of work stress, job satisfaction and work-family balance among officials of two public institutions

Purpose: The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of work-family balance on job satisfaction and stress in government employees.

Methodology: a causal, cross-sectional and non-experimental study was conducted, collecting data through an anonymous survey of 341 participants.

Findings: work-family reconciliation had moderate levels, standing out among university staff. Low level of work stress was observed. Job satisfaction levels ranged from moderate to high. The correlations indicate that a positive perception of work-life balance is associated with better work control, and improved relationship with supervisors and collaborators.

Practical implications: The findings give a valuable perspective to improve human resource management in public institutions and ensure a healthy and balanced work environment in public institutions.

Originality/value: this study highlights the importance of work-life balance to improve satisfaction and reduce work stress in public institutions.

A Legacy of Animosity in the Southern Cone of South America? Attitudes of Paraguayan Consumers Towards Argentina and Brazil

Purpose: This article explores the interconnection between Paraguayan consumer behavior and products from Argentina and Brazil, situating the study within the context of past hostilities (animosity) and present uneven relations among the three nations.

Methodology: Employing snowball sampling methodology, we conducted surveys with 385 middle- and upper-class Paraguayans from the greater Asunción area, both in-person and online, during the first half of 2022. The survey included questions on country-of-origin scales (specially consumer animosity), product preferences, and demographics. We developed and estimated a conceptual model connecting antecedents with Paraguayan consumer attitudes toward Argentina and Brazil using multiple regression.

Findings: The impact of acculturation and the receipt of household remittances is significant on consumer animosity (CA). Elevated levels of acculturation intensify CA, while receiving household remittances acts as a mitigating factor against CA feelings.

Practical Implications: Novel antecedents of consumer animosity inform and may guide decision-making for businesses and policymaking in addressing consumer animosity in Paraguay.

Originality: This is the first study of consumer animosity in Paraguay.

Study on the verbal communication among managers in venezuelan private banking from the perspective of the 5 Elements of Neurocommunication Model

Purpose: To diagnose the state of verbal communication among managers in Venezuelan private banking from the perspective of neurocommunication.

Methodology: This research was both exploratory and descriptive in nature, employing a qualitative approach with a non-experimental, field-based, cross-sectional design and a phenomenological orientation. The sample comprised nine managers from the top 10 banks in Venezuela. Data collection involved qualitative, non-standardized, and unstructured interviews.

Findings: Managers in Venezuelan private banking exhibit a fairly adequate understanding of concepts related to communication and recognize its significance in achieving organizational objectives. However, they reveal difficulties in effectively managing all the elements that constitute the applied neurocommunication model, influenced by personal, organizational, and cultural factors.

Implications: The study identified a set of dysfunctional elements in verbal communication among managers in Venezuelan private banks, which hinder the achievement of their objectives. These elements should be taken into account in development of their corporate communication plans.

Value: The practical application of the 5 Elements of Neurocommunication Model within a specific organizational context facilitated a novel approach to verbal communication in a key sector of Venezuelan economy.

Impact factors on work performance: A study on adaptability to telework during COVID-19 pandemic

Purpose: to examine company and work-related factors that impact employee’s adjustment to telework imposed by COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on work performance.

Methodology: PLS technique with a sample of 374 employees measured the impact of work performance during COVID-19 pandemic.

Findings: Results suggest that firm-related factors such as management support and training culture have a positive influence on job-related aspects such as management affirmation, personal competence, communication tasks and work autonomy.

Implications: To provide businesses with information on the factors that enable them to support employees through effective communication of tasks and expectations regarding their job performance.

Originality: An innovative model is introduced to illustrate the applicability of the Labor Adjustment Theory highlighting the company and work-related factors that facilitate the adaptability of employees to achieve better work performance in disruptive environments.

Reduction maternal death rate in Mexico: from the perspective of idealism of development

Background: Reduction of maternal death rate is a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Mexico. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to ascertain if there is a relationship among maternal death rates and variables in the economic-social field (7), health-demographic (16), work (6), home (3) infrastructure and housing assets (8).

Material and method: three multiple linear regression models were estimated using data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI): Vital Statistics, Population and Housing Census and National Population Council (CONAPO).

Results: Expectation in schooling and postpartum care are variables that influence the rate of maternal death in Mexico. In statistical terms, the rate of maternal death could be reduced up to 15% if the number of women receiving postpartum care increased by one percentage point.

Conclusions: Mexico City exhibits the highest rate of maternal deaths. Even though modernization assumptions are widely spread in the city, and women would seek hospital care during pregnancy, childbirth or the postpartum period, the truth is that the healthcare system does not incorporate strategies to reduce the level of maternal mortality. Concrete actions rather than sole dissemination of knowledge, must be taken if Mexico is to comply with this SDG of UNO’s 2030 agenda. Which shows limitations of development idealism to explain maternal death, the mere dissemination of knowledge and values without a drive for concrete actions complicates the panorama. The above could hinder Mexico's compliance with the established goal of the SDGs established in the 2030 Agenda.

An approach to financial valuation methodologies: bibliometric analysis and systematic review of the literature

Purpose: To develop an approach to financial valuation methodologies as a tool that allows managers to have an objective and decisive vision to generate business value.

Methodology: A bibliometric analysis was conducted on Scopus indexed research articles using R Core Team 2022-Bibliometrix and VOSviewer software, and a systematic literature review adhering to the PRISMA protocol.

Findings: The main methodologies for financial valuation include cash flows, real options, net present value, valuation by multiples, economic value added, and various complementary financial ratios.

Practical implications: It is evident that there is a shortage of literature on the subject, despite that fact a consistent growth was observed.

Originality: Financial valuation methodologies enable managerial decision-making associated with company valuation for long-term benefit.

A systematic review of Political Skill research with bibliometric indicators

Results: The most significant authors, publications, articles and journals in political skill are exposed, providing an understanding of their production as a resource for social effectiveness.

Implications: To highlight in the business world the value coming from research on political skill to promote the development of competencies in commercial representatives of companies, a more robust relationship with customers and a better understanding of the competitive scenario.

Originality: To contribute in an unprecedented way with a guide that summarizes and orients with respect to research in political skill and encourages the incorporation of this resource for the future performance of firms.

The new consumer and its evolution after COVID-19

Purpose: To introduce the concept of the new consumer, this study examines the concept evolution and transformation over time, exploring the behavioural changes as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic.

Methodological design: A systematic literature review was conducted mainly on Scopus databases and to a lesser extent EBSCO and Google Scholar.

Results: Analysis of the transformation of consumer behaviour addressing its evolution, characteristics, and main changes in its definition across the different stages of marketing, as well as the incidence of the COVID 19 pandemic in this development. This aims to introduce a forefront concept of the new consumer by compiling the up-to-date perspective of different authors.

Implications: To understand the evolution, needs and preferences of consumers of the post-pandemic digital era.

Originality: To identify the new consumer in times of pandemic and the organizational transformation in the face of new market needs.

Cost management and customer service in business performance: a case study in the garment industry

Purpose: this study aims to examine the existing cost management system within company in the clothing industry.

Methodology: through a qualitative and descriptive study, we applied the developing and effective managerial costing model by Lawson et al. (2019).

Results: The results reveal the significance of cost management systems and excellent customer service in small businesses to achieve a greater negotiating capacity with customers.

Implications: This article contributes with a solid foundation for the diagnosis of a cost management system.

Originality: this work offers a comprehensive conceptual framework and practical tools that facilitate professionals to advance in the assessment of cost management systems, thereby influencing decision-making and business performance.
