The Red Sea Region in Pomponius Mela’s Chorography

This paper analyzes the chapters that the Spanish author Pomponius Mela devoted to the Red Sea region in his geographical work, entitled Chorography. This author wrote a text of high literary value, but with a content quite indebted to the Greek geographical and paradoxographic tradition. One of the authors that Mela followed most closely was Herodotus, especially in regard to the description of the area that Greeks and Romans knew under the name of “Ethiopia”.
