The social movement of "pobladores" during the Popular Unity, 1970-1973
Keywords:
Urban poor, mobilization, social organizationsAbstract
This article argues that the urban poor in Chilean cities, los pobladores, expanded their mobilizations and demands for housing starting in the late 1960s but especially during the Popular Unity government (1970-1973). They did so through their own organizational efforts and popular organizations as well as in conjunction with political parties. Greater mobilization by pobladores coupled with the State's response favored the creation of new working-class neighborhoods, which permitted the individuals who mobilized to change their way of life in Chile's largest cities.
