Abstract

This article examines how the complex causes, symptoms and consequences of anorexia nervosa and bulimia are represented in the narratives of two contemporary Chilean writers: Ana María del Río and Andrea Maturana. I propose that the physical and psychological manifestations of these eating disorders are closely related to complex manifold problems reflecting the diverse ways in which the protagonists relate to their social environment. The novel Oxido de Carmen and the short story “Verde en el borde” not only unveil the problems of women in a society whose socio-cultural and ideological foundations are being questioned, but also bring forth an important subversive message.
