Examining theoretical alternatives for understanding the world beyond transcendental idealism is perhaps one of the most challenging tasks that philosophy can undertake today. Expanding reflection beyond cognitive relativism, phenomenological solipsism, or the crudest forms of materialism is a task that Manuel DeLanda (b. 1952) has undertaken in his singular philosophical project. Mexican by birth but Anglo-Saxon in formation, DeLanda has set out to extract a realist ontology from the work of Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995) and Félix Guattari (1930–1992). This endeavor is notable not only for its significant political relevance but also for its considerable lucidity and profound comprehension of these two authors' thought.
