The Enlightenment and its Concealments

Under the premise that the Enlightenment constitutes an unfinished project of emancipation, this analysis delves into the gender omissions that marked the 'Age of Enlightenment.' It examines the shift toward reason and scientific progress, underscoring how these faculties were articulated from a patriarchal perspective that excluded women from full citizenship and education. Despite the critical contributions of figures such as Condorcet, de Gouges, and Wollstonecraft, the ideal of equality remained limited to the masculine public sphere, relegating the feminine to the private realm. The author concludes that feminism represents the definitive validation of Enlightenment principles, arguing that the universality of reason will only be effective when it succeeds in illuminating and dismantling the historical zones of female subordination
