Although there are many works that analyse the education policies of Salvador Allende’s government (Chile, 1970-1973), few investigations have analysed in more detail the discussions generated among the actors who formulated and discussed the design and implementation of these policies. This article examines the debates, agreements, and tensions developed among members of the National Education Council during the years of the Popular Unity government. The present work contributes in two areas: on the one hand, it brings to light a source that has remained largely unexplored to date, the minutes in which the meetings of the Council are registered, and on the other, it offers historical evidence to enrich the understanding of the education policies of Salvador Allende’s government. Based on the analysis of these minutes, we look more deeply into the reasons that led the Executive to promote its education policies, while identifying the apprehensions that these initiatives caused among actors in the field of education who did not form part of the government coalition.
