The following study proposes a reflexive approach to a set of representations elaborated around the periphery of Santiago, within cinema and literature. Specifically, the approach to the work of Gonzalo Justiniano, Pedro Lemebel and Diamela Eltit has allowed us to discuss the capacity that representations of the city have in order to produce and share meanings. These three cases are significant since they develop concrete mechanisms for approaching the periphery, the perceptions, and the readings it activates. The representations we studied show the constitution of an ‘other’ space, which tends to remain outside, beyond the margins that define the extension of the city, both in physical and symbolic terms. Our study recognises in these representations a ‘double outside’, as this periphery is situated beyond the city as a material definition and against the productive time demanded and imposed by neoliberal logic.
