This article covers pre-Tridentine pastoral visits within the Crown of Castile. The focus of this paper is the yisitatio rerum or material examination of things to reflect on how records were kept and their documentary value. The author holds that the format of the visits was suited to the interests and needs of bishops and visitors, which in turn determined the record-keeping strategies themselves.
