The role of England and the United States in the Chilean Civil War of 1891 is examined in the light of the external factors that influenced both the foreign policy of the United Kingdom and the United States. It is maintained that these external factors were more important than the internal Chilean ones in explaining the policies of these two countries towards Chile.
