In this article, it is sustained that the expansion cycle of the Chile saltpeter ceased with the crisis that began in 1920. In imaginary of people, it is the crisis of the 30's the one that ended the great expansion of the saltpeter in Chile. The author gives information about economic and social themes, in order to demonstrate his conjecture, standing out the information obtained from the files at the Intendencia de Tarapacá and the interviews with pampinos who were part of the Chile saltpeter crisis. He analyzes the social problem that lead to the de cay of the expansion cycle of saltpeter, specially to Chilean and Bolivian unemployed workers.
