Violeta Parra and her Conection with the Popular Culture of the Biobío Frontier (1917-1934)

Abstract

This article pretends to analyze the channels towards Violeta Parra appropriates of the border culture from the Biobío region. Methodologically, this article was built mixing ethnographical research on the area of San Carlos with the known bibliography about this border area and the “decimas” published by Violeta Parra and, on a minor quantity, by his brother Eduardo. With respect to the development of this article, it tries to give a setting of the border culture on the transition from the XIX to the XX Century, and to make a theoretical reflection introducing a state of question of the matter as well. Then, to analyze the main points of connection between that frontier and Violeta: family, the approaching and interaction with the rural society from her working experience, essentially urban, which develops until she integrates the migratory flow towards Santiago.
