Abstract

In this paper, I examine the digression on Cleonymus’s attack on Veneto included in Book X of Ab urbe condita. My aim is to propose an interpretation of the insertion of this narrative into a section of Livy’s work in which the Veneti had not yet met the Romans. To this end, I analyse different aspects mentioned in the passage, and consider both the narrative context where the excursus is placed and the historical framework when Livy wrote and published this text. I suggest that this digression is an autoethnographic narrative by which the historian pretends to display a positive image of the Veneti –i.e. a virtuous people in the cultural terms of his Roman audience– In a background of political and cultural change in the Roman empire.
