Abstract

This article analyzes how from the foundation of the city, Rome not only defined its hegemony with the use of the army, it also did it with the control of maritime trade, that is, the command of the sea. We will review the history of Rome and highlight those war events that impacted on the origin, development and fragmentation of that political unit which the Romans called Mare Nostrum.
