Abstract

Objective: To understand the manifestations of violence in undergraduate nursing and its effects on learning and care, from the student’s perspective. Material and Method: Qualitative study with a exploratorydescriptive design, developed in a Higher Education Institution (IES) in Brazil and conducted with 15 undergraduate nursing students. The interviews were conducted between May and June 2019. The prestructured instrument consisted of 15 questions, divided into four dimensions: understanding violence, relationship between violent acts and individual characteristics, perception and experience of violence in the context of undergraduate nursing, and possible resistance strategies. The data underwent content analysis. Results: Violence is experienced among peers, with teachers and with the professionals of the health services where students undertake their internships. It is mainly related to the personal characteristics of individuals and the learning contexto. Theoretical and practical activities are considered as violence triggers. They accompany the reports, the recognition of more rigid pedagogical attitudes, the lack of student appreciation and the evaluation as a punitive tool with situations that can potentially generate violence. Conclusion: Violence manifests itself in several different ways during the learning process in undergraduate nursing,
negatively influencing student learning and nursing care.
