Abstract

Objective: To describe the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the care of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in urgent and emergency healthcare services. Material and Method: Descriptive research with a qualitative approach, based on the theoretical framework of family resilience. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with 14 families of children with ASD from January 2022 to April 2023, respecting ethical and legal aspects. Data analysis was performed through multiple case studies supported by the WebQDA software. Results: The following 3 subcategories emerged: Behavioral changes in children with
ASD, Family-related sentiment in urgent and emergency care, Urgent and emergency care service during
the pandemic. Families of children with ASD were part of a highly vulnerable group during the pandemic, especially in urgent and emergency care settings, as with the imposition of social isolation led to irritable behaviors in children due to the disruption of routine. Conclusion: There is a need for governments,
public programs and policies to develop and implement mental health prevention and early intervention
strategies aimed at the resilience of families of children with ASD, as well as the involvement of family members in health care.
