Abstract

A description of the karyotype of Leontochir ovallei Phil. is provided. The species corresponded to a population of Llanos de Challe National Park, Atacama Region, Chile. A karyotype 2n = 2x = 18 and the haploid formula of 2m + 1sm + 2st + 1st-sat + 3 t was determined. Its taxonomic position is discussed based on cytological information, leaf anatomy, flower morphology, habitat and molecu- lar analysis. It was concluded that Leontochir has sufficient attributes to be considered as different genus of Bomarea.
