This article about Humo hacia el sur by Marta Brunet analyses the author’s contribution to female identity, this is done through the presentation of mutilated human beings from the psychological and spiritual points of view. The novel is built up with a permanent dialogue between established social rules and human needs, showing that the former ones lose their sense from the moment they are considered to be an obstacle to reach a plain humanity.
