Abstract

The editorial emphasizes the importance of ergonomics across various fields, from product and space design to occupational health. Despite its relevance, ergonomics and ergonomists are often insufficiently integrated into these areas. The text notes a concerning stagnation in occupational health disciplines, largely due to companies and insurers adopting a utilitarian approach focused mainly on meeting minimum legal requirements. This has led to the dismantling of essential structures—such as ergonomics units and occupational medicine departments—and a decline in experienced professionals, ultimately weakening preventive interventions. Additionally, existing labor health regulations have not evolved in line with current epidemiological needs, remaining overly focused on accident prevention. Meanwhile, occupational diseases, though statistically undervalued, have increased in recognized cases without corresponding structural changes. The editorial calls for modernization, stronger multidisciplinary teams, and updated regulations to adequately address contemporary challenges—before a major health crisis forces necessary change.
