The aim of this study was to know the profile of patients with a first episode of acute myocardial infarction and to identify risk factors for this disease. Seventy eight patients from the Coronary Care Unit of two University Hospitals were interviewed. The data was obtained through interviews conducted according to the Health Field Model proposed by LALONDE. As for the risk factors, we noticed that 81,4% (100) of the patients had sedentary life, 64,2% (79) had hypertension, 48,6% (60) were smokers, 32,4% had obesity, 30,1% (37) had dyslipidemias and 26,1% had diabetes mellitus. Regarding the association of modifiable risk factors, 85,3% (105) of the patients showed three or more factors. These results will help to elabórate an educational program aiming at preventing reinfarction and promoting health.
