When planning assistance to women admitted to rooming-in care, it is important to know their characteristics in order to provide safe and high-quality care. Thus, this study aimed to characterize post-partum women admitted to rooming-in care socio-demographically and obstetrically. Method: This is a descriptive quantitative study, conducted with 322 post-partum women at a university hospital, during the period between December 2011 and March 2012, using an instrument with closed and open questions in order to obtain the mothers' profile. A descriptive analysis of data was performed through absolute and relative frequencies. Results: The average age was 26.4 years, most of them were single, multiparous and had prior experience on breastfeeding. Besides, they all went through pre-natal care and some of them gave birth by caesarian section. Conclusion: The characterization of post-partum women may increase possibilities for nursing action, considering the context, directing care and assistance to these women.
