Abstract

The interest of the government to grow rice in Chile began in the 19th century, but specific actions to promote its cultivation were not taken until the 20th century. Several trials failed, but varieties introduced from Italy worked well. In 1937, 2,100 hectares were planted and rice gained importance. Since then, its production increased rapidly, covering the area known as the Intermediate Depression, which extends from the Metropolitan Region to the Bio Bio Region in the south. At present, the cultivated area of rice has decreased and concentrates mainly in province of Linares (Maule Region), and in province of Ñuble (Bio Bio Region). As a result of the research program created by the government in 1954, which was transferred to the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) in 1964, current yield is higher than 6 t ha-1. This research program has released cold-tolerant varieties adapted to local conditions, and has also established better crop management techniques.
