Abstract

The relationship between the analytic tradition of philosophy and metaphysics is, to say the least, complex. Generally, the emergence of analytic philosophy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is interpreted as a challenge to the alleged obscurity of metaphysics. This understanding is grounded in one of the foundational episodes of the analytic tradition, embodied in the opposition between Bertrand Russell (1940), who focused on logic and the nature of language, and the idealism and monism of F. H. Bradley (1930). Another key episode in this tradition is found in Gottlob Frege’s (1884) reflections on the notion of logical consequence, which largely arose from his attempt to clarify the nature of mathematical knowledge—a question that, at first glance, appears unrelated to metaphysics. Furthermore, his opposition to psychologism stands as an essential point in the development of the analytic tradition.
