Facing the requirements of mobility and flexibility imposed by the characteristics of an increasingly connectionist and reticulated world, where mobility becomes an element of differentiation and social exclusion, the territory of proximity -neighborhood - constitutes a support opposed to the difficulties of moving farther.
In a context where urban policies are promoting mobility as condition for social and professional insertion, it seems to be pertinent to include the experience of the inhabitants and the strategies of mobility focused in proximity to avoid weakening certain resources placed in local areas.
This paper is based upon a research in a peripheral neighborhood of Santiago of Chile where, from ethnographic perspective, observations, informal conversations and a total of 35 open interviews were made to investigate the importance of proximity territory. We argue in this article, that the local character of the employment and social networks reveals that of mobility of lower income groups, are especially defined by proximity.
