Abstract

Objective: To describe and analyze the fathers' experience during their partners' process of parturition. Method: Qualitative research. 24 fathers were interviewed at random from among those present at the moment of consultation / childcare activities in four Municipal Health Centers (CMS) of Rio de Janeiro. The technique of semi-structured interviews allowed to investigate about the sociodemographic conditions and issues related to this experience. The collected data were subjected to thematic analysis. Results: Parents were unable to put into words the feelings, sensations and emotions they had during the birth process. Conclusion: a re-evaluation of health professionals is urgent regarding the presence of the father and preparation of the whole birth process.
