Abstract

This work approaches the psychosocial context of the family facing a family member temporary due to hospitalization at an emergency ward of a city at south of the Rio Grande Do Sul State. This is qualitative, descriptive and analytical study group, developed with three families. A participant observation, assisted by a semi-structuralized and recorded interview was carried out. Verbalizations were comanded and categorized in two thematic branches: Family and its expressions concerning the family-patient hospitalization at the emergency ward and the health professional and the emergency situation: naturalizing the suffering. Analysis has been oriented by the concepts of circular organization and the family’s systemic therapy recursively. We verified that hospitalization at the emergency ward disestablish the family, thus producing psychic suffering, and that the nursing when facing the life risk, super overvalues the technique in detriment of the patient and the family care finding out that this was a nursing strategy to prevent their proper psychic suffering. We conclude that the humanized care at the emergency wards is still incipient and that the nurses must understand the social relationships their patients have, including them at the therapeutical project of the ward.
