NURSING AND HUMANISTIC CARE: PROPOSAL OF INTERVENTION FOR MOTHERS OF NEWBORN INFANTS UNDER PHOTOTHERAPY

This study aimed to describe nursing interventions based in strategies and techniques of communication with the mother of newborn under phototherapy. It is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study. The subjects were five mothers whose newborn were under phototherapy in a public maternity ward in Fortaleza- CE. Data were collected in November and December 2003 through semi-structured interview and analyzed on the light of the Paterson and Zderad’s Humanistic Nursing Theory . The results showed that the mother has lack of knowledge about phototherapy the communication between the health team and the newborn’s mother is deficient. The nursing interventions involved the search for genuine dialogue between the nurse and the binomial mother-son, application of illustrated panels about the story and the
treatment under phototherapy and the formation of meeting groups about health.
