Objective: To describe the experiences of digestive ostomy carriers. Method: Qualitative study based on the Husserl’s descriptive phenomenology, with a sample population of six adults from different health institutions in Manizales, Colombia. The data collection was carried out using in-depth interviews until achieving data saturation. Results: Life stories show the experiences of ostomized patients. Five main topics were identified: Uncertainty regarding ostomy, body image, perception of loss, historical load and health care assistance as a support system. Conclusion: There is a clear need for the nursing care professional, both as a caregiver and a leader, to monitor integrative care, allowing the ostomized patient to assist their own needs, overcome fears and contribute to helping the patient understand their condition from a self-care approach.
