Based on the mapping previously carried out by the General Water Directorate for the Public Inventory of Glacier Lakes, a national characterization of these lakes was developed by dividing the data and analysis by glaciological macrozone and region. A total of 5,384 lakes were identified, with 76% located
in the austral macrozone. The analysis also incorporates hazard and risk categories. Although all lakes present some level of hazard related to sudden
drainage, not all represent a risk, as this depends on the exposed population and infrastructure. The southern macrozone stands out for having the highest
concentration of lakes classified as risky, particularly in the Los Lagos region, despite the fact that the more austral regions contain a greater number of
lakes overall. This is explained by the higher population density in the southern areas, which increases vulnerability and, consequently, the associated risk.
