The review on the creation and development of the Institute of Geography at the University of Concepción identifies the context and paradigm in which it emerges -and the initial academics-. It provides a view on the main tendencies in Geographic discipline in a national an international level, at that time. The period is characterized by the creation of the Institutes of Geography as a consequence of the University Regionalization. This process had the influences of French and German schools. The Institutes of Geography at both Universities -Chile and Concepción- shared a similar paradigm. Nevertheless, there were some differences, especially in the development of urban geography. To illustrate: the pioneering computer based research on periphery neighborhoods by the Institute of Geography at the University of Concepción, in 1966.
