Abstract

We live in the era of globalization and migration; this is reflected in the fact that different people settle in territories that are foreign to their own and are inserted into society to the extent that they manage to build a new life. During this process, they must face various cultural barriers, including linguistic proficiency, the analysis of which has had an impact on current second language teaching approaches.

This study reflects on the scope of the communicative approach, its shortcomings and contributions to the teaching and learning of a second language, and analyzes the emergence of the intercultural approach as a new teaching-learning methodology in the current migratory context that considers the concept of the other, of a different culture and, with it, to form citizens sensitive to the culture of entry. This new conception of teaching presupposes a new perspective of instruction, of the students, of the materials, etc., and impacts communication between people of identical or different cultures through the development of communication and intercultural skills.
