Ecological studies in the rocky littoral of Bahía Quintero (32°44’S. 73°31’W) Chile, have been carried out and the results reveal two main patterns of vertical distribution differentiated by either a Biological Discontinuity Band or a Transitional Fringe between the Terrestrial and Marine Systems. Besides three community groups have been found, namely:
a) Community characterized by a high biomass and a great number of species (i. e., Semimytilus, Corallina, Balanus-Peiroglossum); communities living in a wavy environment.
b) Community characterized by a low biomass and a relative small number of species (i. e., Colpomenia, Gelidium, Rhodochorion communities) living in a calm environment.
c) Community characterized by high total biomass and a wide range of horizontal distribution (i. e., Chihamalus, Perumyiilus communities).
