Abstract

A study on the biogeographic divisions accomplished by several authors on the chilean territory is presented. A short critical analysis of every opinion is made, and the original maps are redrawn. Based on the distribución of 903 animal species inhabiting the chilean territory, a zoogeographic división was made by means of a program developed for a 1620 IBM Computer, in order to look for levels of similarity among the different areas. With the same purpose the Araoz, J. 1968 method was used. Finally a map was made with all the Information collected, in which the chilean territory is divided in five areas and on 31 zoogeographic zones. A name to design each area and each zone is proposed.
