Abstract

We analyze Apuntes Gramaticales by Eudomilia Gallardo, a teacher and
writer from Osorno (Chile). Th e primary goal is to examine the metadiscursive practices
of Eudomilia Gallardo in relation to the hegemonic regime of language within
the national educational system. As a secondary goal, we reconstruct Gallardo’s sociocultural
and intellectual profi le. Th e analysis reveals that Gallardo was a glottopolitical
vector at the beginning of the 20th century, because in her role as a teacher and
professional in the fi eld of language studies, she reproduced and transmitted Andrés Bello’s habitus in a multilingual territory recently repopulated and colonized by the
Chilean state, as was the case of Osorno. With this study we look for new social actors
participating in the conformation and reproduction of regimes of language in Chile, in
particular women and intellectuals from the regions instead of the capital.
