TO MYCORRHIZAL INOCULATION (Glomus sp.) DURING THE NURSERY STAGE https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22892 <p>Coffee is one of the most representative agricultural products of Colombia and worldwide, particularly in the Huila Department, due to its high production and excellent quality. As coffee is a crop of high economic value and is increasingly affected by the impacts of climate change, it is essential that the nursery stage contributes to improved crop development and resilience. In order to promote and encourage new practices among coffee growers in the region, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation (<em>Glomus intraradices</em>) in a coffee nursery located in the municipality of Hobo, Huila. The experiment included two treatments with different doses of a commercial liquid arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculant (Biofermex®), based on <em>G.</em> sp.: T1, with 5 cm³ L?¹ of water, and T2, with 10 cm³ L?¹ of water, as well as a non-inoculated control treatment (T0). Evaluations were conducted from 30 to 105 days after transplanting (DAT), assessing primary root length (PRL), number of secondary roots (NSR), stem diameter (SD), stem length (SL), total leaf area (TLA), and total dry mass (TDM). Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and graphical methods, whereas a technical and economic assessment was carried out to compare production costs during the nursery period. The results showed that T1 and T2 presented statistically significant increases in NSR (44.4 and 27.4%) and TLA (84.5 and 24.7%) compared with the control. In addition, the implementation of temporary nurseries with appropriate mycorrhizal management resulted in 36.34% higher profitability compared with the purchase of seedlings from external nurseries.</p> Carlos Alberto Garzón-Pajoy Jordan Alexis Castillo-Coronado Juan Gonzalo Ardila-Marín Diana Carolina Polanía-Montiel Jean Carlos Acosta-Vargas Derechos de autor 2026 Carlos Alberto Garzón-Pajoy, Jordan Alexis Castillo-Coronado, Juan Gonzalo Ardila-Marín, Diana Carolina Polanía-Montiel, Jean Carlos Acosta-Vargas https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 359 372 10.29393/CHJAAS42-30GRCJ50030 LIQUID DAIRY MANURE IMPROVED THE SHORT-TERM PHYSICAL QUALITY OF AN ARGIUDOLL https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22611 <p>The application of liquid dairy manure (LDM), which is an effluent generated in dairy production facilities from a mixture of feces, urine, milking-parlor wash water, and feed residues, can be a sustainable alternative to improve soil quality. This study aimed to determine the effect of different LDM doses on chemical and physical fertility indicators and overall quality of a silt loam Typic Argiudoll cultivated under no-till. The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with three blocks and four treatments (LDM doses): D0, no application; D1, 60 m3 ha?1; D2, 120 m3 ha?1; and D3, 180 m3 ha?1. LDM was applied five days before sorghum planting, in November 2019. Chemical properties were evaluated 10 days later. Physical properties and aboveground biomass were assessed in March 2020. Global index of soil physical quality (GISPQ) and least limiting water range (LLWR) were also obtained as indicators of overall quality. Increasing LDM dose resulted in progressively lower soil bulk density (from 1.40 in D0 to 1.37 g cm?3 in D3), penetration resistance, effective stress, and higher organic matter (+29% from D0 to D3), biomass (up to +26%), nutrient concentrations and electrical conductivity (from 0.6 to 2.0 dS m?1), while pH remained unaltered. GISPQ and LLWR reflected significant differences between D0 and D1 compared to D2 and D3. LDM doses D2 and D3 improved short-term soil structural quality, mainly due to their greater contribution of organic matter, supporting the hypothesis that appropriate LDM application rates can enhance soil physical quality in the short term despite the associated increase in soluble salts. The results suggest that LDM is a viable alternative for the sustainable management of agricultural systems and for reducing their negative environmental impact. However, the observed increase in electrical conductivity indicates that soil salinity should be monitored to prevent potential long-term risks to crop yield.</p> Aline Martineli Batista Eugenia Oggero Silvia Imhoff Pablo Ghiberto Derechos de autor 2026 Aline Martineli Batista, Eugenia Oggero, Silvia Imhoff, Pablo Ghiberto https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 169 186 10.29393/CHJAAS42-16LDAP40016 VALIDATION OF REFLECTOQUANT™ FOR SOLUBLE REACTIVE PHOSPHORUS MONITORING IN SURFACE WATERS https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22488 <p>High-frequency monitoring of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) is essential for managing eutrophication in developing regions, but laboratory-based UV-Vis spectrophotometry (SPEC) is often limited by cost and logistics. This study evaluates the portable Reflectoquant™ (REFL) reflectometric method against SPEC using synthetic standards and 300 filtered river samples from Uruguayan watersheds (0.010–2.400 mgPO?-P L-1). Statistical analyses included Spearman correlation, regression models, and Bland-Altman plots. Strong monotonic relationships were found (? = 0.979 for standards; ? = 0.890 for rivers). Simple linear regression showed the best fit (adjusted R² ? 0.972; root mean square error (RMSE) ? 0.018 mgPO?-P L-1). Bland-Altman analysis indicated minor overall bias (+0.009 mg L-1), with overestimation at trace levels (&lt;0.025 mg L?¹; bias –0.022 mg L?¹) and underestimation at higher concentrations (?0.100 mg L-1; bias +0.015 mg L-1). While sensitivity is limited at trace levels, REFL’s portability and low cost make it an effective field-screening tool in Uruguay, where SRP accounts for 17–100% of total phosphorus and often exceeds the 0.025 mg L-1 eutrophication threshold. Estos hallazgos sugieren que EETP-800 es una alternativa viable para sistemas agroforestales en zonas subtropicales de Ecuador, combinando crecimiento vigoroso con equilibrio nutricional.</p> Josselyn Jhoana Rodríguez Cruz Ricardo Augusto Luna Murillo Kleber Augusto Espinosa Cunuhay Giovana Parra Gallardo Derechos de autor 2026 Josselyn Jhoana Rodríguez Cruz, Ricardo Augusto Luna Murillo, Kleber Augusto Espinosa Cunuhay, Giovana Parra Gallardo https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 210 223 10.29393/CHJAAS42-19RMJR40019 EFFECT OF FOLIAR IRON RATES AND APPLICATION TIMING ON LETTUCE (Lactuca sativa L.) BIOFORTIFICATION IN AN NFT HYDROPONIC SYSTEM https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22552 <p>Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for living organisms and plays a key role in numerous physiological processes. Agronomic biofortification with Fe can increase its concentration in edible plant tissues, representing a promising strategy to improve dietary Fe intake and help prevent iron-deficiency anemia, particularly in vulnerable populations. Two experiments were carried out in winter and summer to evaluate the effects of foliar iron application on hydroponically grown lettuce (<em>Lactuca sativa</em> L.) cv. ‘Waldmann’s Green’ at three concentrations (2, 4, and 6 mg L-1) and three application timings: 100% at 10 days after transplant (DAT); 100% at 20 DAT; and 50% at 10 DAT plus at 20 DAT. Production of leaf fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, and foliar N, P, K and Fe were evaluated. A randomized complete block design was used, with a 3x3+1 factorial arrangement, with five replications per treatment. Analysis of variance was performed for winter and summer experiments plus a combined analysis of both experiments. Fe rates or application timings did not affect fresh and dry matter contents of leaves or roots. However, the growing season significantly affected root fresh and dry matter content. N, P and K foliar concentrations were influenced by Fe application rates and timings, with significant variations between growing seasons. Efficient Fe biofortification in lettuce leaves was observed starting at 4 mg L-1 of Fe, being higher in summer.</p> Ronald Alexis Cortez-Lázaro Juan Waldir Mendoza-Cortez Andrés Virgilio Casas-Díaz Héctor Baroni Cántaro-Segura Anthony Apolinario Cortez-Lázaro Derechos de autor 2026 Ronald Alexis Cortez-Lázaro, Juan Waldir Mendoza-Cortez, Andrés Virgilio Casas-Díaz, Héctor Baroni Cántaro-Segura, Anthony Apolinario Cortez-Lázaro https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 224 237 10.29393/CHJAAS42-20FRRJ50020 POTENCIAL BIOESTIMULANTE DE CEPAS MUTANTES DE Trichoderma harzianum EN TOMATE (Solanum lycopersicum L.), CULTIVADO EN SUSTRATOS CON CARACTERÍSTICAS CONTRASTANTES https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22743 <p>El género <em>Trichoderma</em> comprende especies capaces de interactuar con plantas y sustratos, favorece procesos asociados con el crecimiento vegetal. When improperly disposed or accumulated, it can contribute to air, water, and soil pollution. Therefore, developing alternative uses for this waste is essential, including its incorporation into animal diets as a potential source of dietary fiber. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of different fiber sources in rabbit diets on productive performance, carcass traits, and meat quality. A one-way experimental design was used to evaluate 45 rabbits (35 days old) of New Zealand x California x Mariposa crossbred genotype. The rabbits were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments: spent <em>P. ostreatus</em> substrate (SGP), barley straw (PCE), alfalfa hay (TA), and a mixture of wheat bran and soybean hulls (STCS) for a period of 28 days, in which productive parameters were evaluated. Subsequently, the animals were slaughtered to determine carcass traits and meat quality. The results revealed that the inclusion of SGP increased hot carcass weight and the amount of meat in the legs (P &lt;0.05), but did not affect productive parameters or meat quality (P&gt; 0.05). However, the SCTS group recorded lower final weight and body weight gain. The results allow concluding that spent <em>P. ostreatus</em> substrate can feasibly be used as a fiber source in rabbit diets, as its inclusion did not adversely affect productive parameters, carcass traits, or meat quality.</p> Maricela Ayala-Martínez Sergio Soto-Simental Derechos de autor 2026 Maricela Ayala-Martínez, Sergio Soto-Simental https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 300 308 10.29393/CHJAAS42-25FSMS20025 EVALUACIÓN DE UNA ESTRATEGIA ALTERNATIVA DE MANEJO PREDESTETE, BASADA EN LA SUPLEMENTACIÓN CON UN PRODUCTO PROBIÓTICO-FITOGÉNICO EN CONDICIONES COMERCIALES DE PRODUCCIÓN PORCINA https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22888 <p>La restricción del uso de antibióticos promotores de crecimiento en la producción porcina ha impulsado la evaluación de alternativas como los probióticos y los fitobióticos. FOR EARLY SELECTION IN DUAL-PURPOSE MERINO PRECOZ SHEEP UNDER LOW-INPUT CONDITIONS https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/23215 <p>In central Chile’s low?input drylands, sheep breeding is challenged by early selection at weaning, often without pedigree records, and limited resources. These constraints reduce genetic progress, as farmers rely on visual selection. Nevertheless, selection indices provide an alternative for more efficient and accurate genetic improvement of dual-purpose breeds such as Merino Precoz (MP) sheep. This study aimed to estimate regression coefficients and relative contributions (RC) of key traits within several selection indices to optimize breeding objectives and estimate genetic progress in MP sheep. Five indices were simulated under three economic scenarios based on the relative price of fibre diameter (FD) to greasy fleece weight (GFW), integrating pre-weaning and maternal data. The breeding objective included GFW, FD, number of lambs weaned (NLW), weaning weight (WW) and adult weight (AW). Results showed that WW consistently had the greatest RC (8.74–8.82%), while NLW contributed less (4.18–4.22%), and excluding NLW notably increased index accuracy (0.47–0.49 vs. 0.35). Wool traits gained importance as the economic value of FD increased, although WW remained the most influential trait across indices. Expected annual genetic gains ranged from 0.014 to 0.025 kg for GFW, -0.044 to 0.022 µm for FD, 0.279 to 0.300 kg for WW, and 0.525 to 0.621 kg for AW. These findings suggest that excluding NLW from the breeding objective improves accuracy and increases the predicted response for several production traits under low-input systems, while dam live-weight records provide little improvement in accuracy. The coefficients presented in this study are valuable for farmers practicing early selection at weaning, enabling more efficient genetic improvement of wool and meat traits under resource-limited conditions.</p> Felipe Lembeye Giorgio Castellaro Héctor Uribe Derechos de autor 2026 Felipe Lembeye , Giorgio Castellaro, Héctor Uribe https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 319 330 10.29393/CHJAAS42-27SDGGC30027 CHERRY (Prunus cerasus L.) KERNEL PULP SUPPLEMENTATION IN PERIPARTUM KURDI EWES: EFFECTS ON DIGESTIBILITY, ANTIOXIDANT STATUS, AND MILK FATTY ACIDS https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22178 <p>The periparturient period in ewes is characterized by severe metabolic changes, that may pose risks to animal health and performance. Effective management, particularly nutritional strategies, can enhance pre- and post-partum performance while reducing metabolic disorders. This study determined the effects of supplementation with different levels of cherry kernel pulp (CKP) on colostrum and milk fatty acid (FA) profile, nutrient digestibility, and antioxidant indicators in prepartum ewes. Twenty-eight primiparous Kurdi ewes were randomly divided into four groups (n = 7) supplemented with 0, 4, 8, and 12% CKP on dry matter (DM) basis for 3 weeks pre- and post-partum. Blood samples were collected at multiple time points, and colostrum and milk were sampled post-lambing. CKP-supplemented ewes had lower dry matter intake (DMI; p = 0.002) and DM digestibility (p = 0.0001), crude protein (CP; p = 0.0001), and ether extract (EE; p = 0.0001) than control ewes. CKP supplementation did not affect plasma glucose, albumin, creatinine, total protein, high-density lipoprotein, aspartate aminotransferase, or lactate dehydrogenase (p &gt; 0.05). However, CKP supplementation increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC; p = 0.018) and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations (p = 0.001) in plasma. Dietary CKP inclusion did not affect colostrum or milk composition or their FA profiles (p &gt; 0.05). Overall, our findings indicate that CKP supplementation at levels of up to 8% of dietary DM may improve antioxidant status in transition ewes without adversely affecting postpartum milk yield or composition. However, CKP supplementation was associated with reduced DM and CP digestibility.</p> Yaser Feizdar Barabadi Seyyed Ehsan Ghiasi Mohammad Bagher Montazer Torbati Seyed Morteza Vaghar Seyedin Navid Ghavipanje Einar Vargas-Bello-Pérez Derechos de autor 2026 Yaser Feizdar Barabadi, Seyyed Ehsan Ghiasi, Mohammad Bagher Montazer Torbati, Seyed Morteza Vaghar Seyedin, Navid Ghavipanje, Einar Vargas-Bello-Pérez https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-09-01 2026-09-01 42 2 331 344 10.29393/CHJAAS42-28CKYS60028 DATA-DRIVEN PREDICTION OF PIGLETS BORN ALIVE PER FARROWING USING MONTE CARLO-OPTIMISED MULTIPLE REGRESSION https://revistas.udec.cl/chjaas/article/view/22527 <p>In this study, a data-driven nonlinear power regression approach with Monte Carlo-based exponent optimisation was applied to predict the number of piglets born alive per farrowing (PFA). The analysis was based on productivity data from F1 sows obtained by crossbreeding Danish Landrace and Danish Large White breeds and inseminated with semen from Danish Duroc terminal line boars. Data were collected from 114 commercial farms in Denmark and divided into a primary dataset used for model development and an independent test dataset. The Monte Carlo random-search procedure enabled automatic identification of the optimal power exponents, thereby reducing the need for arbitrary variable transformations and improving model accuracy. The final model included a combined nonlinear predictor based on the number of weaned piglets per sow per year (PPSY) and piglet survival rate (PSR%), together with a quadratic term describing the average annual number of farrowings per sow (F). The model achieved high predictive accuracy, with R² = 0.99632, adjusted R² = 0.99623, RMSE = 0.04330, RRMSE = 0.23932%, and CCC = 0.99816. The test dataset RMSE was 0.04725, and the test-to-dataset RMSE ratio was 1.09, indicating good predictive stability and no substantial overfitting. The developed model demonstrated high predictive accuracy, statistical robustness, satisfactory diagnostic performance, and good generalisability. The results indicate that data-driven nonlinear power regression with Monte Carlo-based exponent optimisation may provide a useful approach for modelling biological and zootechnical data, particularly when nonlinear relationships are expected.</p> Mykola Povod Tomasz Cepowski Zofia Cepowska Igor Voshchenko Oleksandr Mykhalko Oleksandr O.
